The Northern Fleet's Bastion coastal missile systems carried out missile launches from the coast of the Franz Josef Land archipelago as part of the Zapad-2025 exercises, the Russian Defense Ministry reported. "After receiving a signal to use missile weapons, the Bastion coastal missile system crews carried out a salvo of two Onyx cruise missiles at a target simulating a detachment of mock enemy ships and located at a distance of over 200 kilometers. According to objective control data, the designated targets were destroyed by direct hits from the cruise missiles," the report says. The Russian Defense Ministry added that the Bastion coastal missile systems with Onyx supersonic anti-ship missiles make it possible to create restricted access and maneuver zones in the Arctic and provide protection for a coastline stretching over 600 kilometers. They can be deployed to combat positions in just a few minutes. The homing cruise missile moves toward its target 2.5 times faster than the speed of sound, while being virtually undetectable to modern air defense and missile defense systems, and is capable of disabling a warship of any displacement at a distance of several hundred kilometers, the Russian Defense Ministry emphasized. The joint strategic exercise of the armed forces of Belarus and Russia, Zapad-2025, started on Friday. Its goal is to test the capabilities of the two countries to ensure the military security of the Union State and their readiness to repel possible aggression.
